On August 15, 1977, Ohio State's 'Big Ear' radio telescope recorded a narrowband burst from the direction of Sagittarius about 30 times stronger than the background, sitting almost exactly on 1420 MHz — the natural hydrogen line that physicists Cocconi and Morrison had argued in 1959 was the logical frequency for interstellar contact. Astronomer Jerry Ehman circled the printout and wrote 'Wow!' It lasted 72 seconds and, despite 40+ years of listening, has never repeated. A 2024 study proposes a hydrogen cloud briefly lit by a passing magnetar, but nothing has been confirmed.
