About 4.5 billion years ago, a Mars-sized protoplanet called Theia collided with the early Earth; debris from the impact coalesced into the Moon. Deep in Earth's mantle, seismologists have long mapped two continent-sized zones of anomalously dense rock (large low-velocity provinces, beneath Africa and the Pacific, near the core-mantle boundary ~2,900 km down). A 2023 study published in Nature (Yuan et al., Caltech) used simulations to propose that these blobs may be surviving chunks of Theia's mantle that sank into the young Earth — meaning the planet that gave us the Moon may literally still be under our feet. It remains a hypothesis, not a confirmed fact.
