On February 23, 1987, underground detectors in Japan (Kamiokande-II), the USA (IMB) and the Soviet Union (Baksan) recorded about 25 neutrinos within roughly 13 seconds — hours before the light of Supernova 1987A became visible. The neutrinos escaped the collapsing core of the star immediately, while the light had to fight its way out through the star's envelope for hours, so the particles reached Earth first after traveling ~168,000 light-years from the Large Magellanic Cloud. SN 1987A was the first naked-eye supernova since 1604, and trillions of its neutrinos passed harmlessly through every human body on Earth.
