A total solar eclipse only exists because the Moon and Sun look the same size in our sky — a 400x-wider Sun that is also ~400x farther away. But the Moon drifts ~1.5 inches farther from Earth every year, so in roughly 600 million years the last total eclipse will happen, and only rings of fire (annular eclipses) will remain. We live in the only era when Earth's two great lights match.
